Abstract
Traditional maps are abstractions of the real world. Among them, topographic maps are the
most self-explaining way to make clear the correspondence of physical and man-made
characteristics. However, topographic maps consisting of contour lines are not intuitive.
In this paper, we present a Web 3D Topographic Map Viewer that generates 3D maps in VRML
on demand for areas in the contiguous USA. This provides access to a huge elevation
database, and the immediate visualization of terrain.
