We pedaled our bicycles steadily.
Two sixteen year old girls riding on the hot asphalt road.
The warm air was redolent of bayberries
and tidal mud.

Above the harbor,
we unpacked white watercolor paper,
blue and white watercolor boxes,
tap water in glass bottles,
watercolor brushes.

I painted a rectangular boat hull.
Slowly emerging on the paper,
it floated in a blue green watercolor wash.
