The morning that he left for Miami,
he showed me where the loaded guns were kept.
There was one under the bed
and one in a lower kitchen drawer.
On the refrigerator,
he had written a name and a phone number.
"The plumber," he said.

"But why would I need a plumber?" I asked.

"In case the water main breaks," he said.
I laughed and leaned over to kiss him,
but he drew back.
