Six or seven cats. Brown-grey.
Obviously sharing one or more parents.
People abandon them by the Salt River.
Rio Salado.
They cluster outside our open door
staring wildly at twice-their-size Tess.
Comfortable well feed sleek California house cat.
Abandoned in childhood herself,
rescued from the shores of Lake Merritt,
she stands her ground in the safety of our doorway,
staring back with curious yellow eyes.
A male runs up the trunk of the grapefruit tree.
Tess licks herself,
pretending not to notice.
