Chilly day in Tempe. Mid afternoon.
I am cold and dirty. Waiting for the gas company to come.
No coffee, no warm water, no showers, no heat for several days.
Been waiting since 8:00 AM.
Do utility companies show up anywhere in the morning?
I imagine the gas men sitting somewhere
eating bean burritos,
swapping stories about irate utility users.
I'm also waiting for the delivery truck that carries my computer.
The delivery men, I imagine,
are drinking coffee, playing hearts in the back of the truck --
using my computer for a table while I wait by the window.
The key for my mailbox was lost by the previous tenant.
It will take five working days to change the locks, the landlord says.
No stores within walking distance carry curtain rods.
