I'd explored most of the rocky coast before,
clambering down there with a flashlight just before daybreak
on the day of the lowest low tide,
cataloging the bright yellow nudibranchs,
the sea hares, urchins, orange and purple starfish,
chitons clinging to rocks, darting sculpins, ocean-green anemones
(their tentacles swaying with the mild swells).
Perfect worlds, miniature, bright and moving.
We ate apple fritters out of a bag at dawn,
our sneakers wet from the rising tide.
