Another phone call from Pasadena,
an e-mail message from Switzerland:
"Do you still have a job?"
Some people are afraid to ask.
I pace while I talk on the phone, stop,
and color my desk blotter with red and orange pencils.
My office smells like the tangerine I had for lunch.

My colleagues aren't talking about the layoffs much.

Once, when I was first working at Xerox PARC,
I said I was glad it was Friday
and another researcher gave me a funny look.
