Active Reading Machine Requirements
For this project, you are to design an Active
Reading Machine. An active reading machine is
one of the new information appliances of digital libraries.
Active reading machines eliminate the "search and
print" model of digital library interaction by providing an
alternative based solely on digital media.
Answer each of the following in a separete set of one or more
web pages:
- Desktop computers fail to support
many key aspects of knowledge work. Describe these
aspects and give scenarios that make your point.
- Reading encompasses a broad range of complex and poorly
understood practices involving
documents. It is this set of practices that is supported
in the active reading machine. Describe these practices
and give scenarios that make your point.
- The desktop metaphor has many
shortcomings and is generally inappropriate for an active
reading machine. Describe these shortcomings and give
scenarios that make your point.
- A paper document metaphor is more appropriate than the
desktop metaphor for an active reading machine. Design
and describe the paper-based metaphor
for your active reading machine and give scenarios that
make your point.
- Design and describe your active
reading machine information appliance. Include a
detailed original illustrated drawing (done by me with
arrows and notes).
Turning your project:
You should simply send the URL of your project to me. I
will browse your project from the WWW and print out anything
I would like to read on paper. I will send your grade via
email.
Notes:
This is an important project which carries 1/4 of the Labs
& Pop Test points.
I am expecting approximately 10 "pages" of writing
/drawing.
