Each student will be responsible for presenting one chapter of the text and for serving as a discussant on two other chapters. The duties of each of these roles is described below.

Duties of the presenter

• Prepare and present a 10 to 20 minute overview of the material in the chapter. Use overheads. Include your name on the first overhead.
• Turn in an electronic copy of the overheads for inclusion in the course's archive of materials. Acceptable formats for this material includes any of the following (in rough order of preference):
  • PDF
  • HTML
  • PowerPoint, either Office 98 (Macintosh), Office 97 (PC), or PowerPoint 4. Do not use later formats than Office 98 as processing of the slides will most likely be done on a Macintosh.
  • PostScript
  • ASCII text

Duties of the discussant

• Have discussion questions ready on the material covered in the chapter. These questions could include issues raised in the chapter but not adequately explained, apparent errors, elements that have become dated with current developments, etc.
• Find an example of material related to the chapter, not covered in the chapter, and be prepared to describe it briefly.

• Each class member should have done the reading before class and be prepared to participate in the discussions.

I expect that we will have a PC and projection equipment available at each class. However, the PC will, in general, not be connected to the network.

If due to time conflicts or other reasons you are unable to schedule a daily presentation, you should prepare an independent research topic presentation of equivalent length. You will need to schedule a time with the instructor to present this to the class. There should be no difficulty with scheduling discussant duties, as more than two discussants can be assigned to a particular chapter.

You may find the lecture slides from a previous class to be of use. These can be accessed off of the course's Web site. Please remember, however, that these slides were intended to be presented over the entire 50 minute course period, so your presentations will have to be much more concise.
