Computer-Human Interaction
CPSC 489
Assignment 2
Written report due: Tuesday December 9, 1997

The goal of this project is to prepare a thoughtful, concise, report and evaluation of material taken from the research literature. This is an individual project. Select either one journal paper or two conference papers from the given sources. Read the paper and prepare a report in the format given below. It may be appropriate and necessary to find and read some of the papers referenced in the one you've selected in order to get enough context to understand the implications of the research. If you select a journal paper, pick a paper from a recent issue of the ACM transactions on computer-human interaction (QA76.9.P75 .A35). If you select two conference papers, pick them from any of the following series:

Each review should have three parts. First give a complete and accurate citation for the publication you have selected. Second, give a brief evaluation of the work, limited to 250 words. More details on the review follow. Third, list other references that you consulted in preparing the report.

The review should both summarize the work and express your opinion of its value. It should be clear, correct, and concise. It should show unity, coherence, and emphasis. Suggested content includes

  1. a summary and opinion: summarize the work and give your (supported) opinion of it.
  2. purpose of work: what is the purpose of the work (e.g., tutorial, research, survey, entertainment, controversy, history, reference)? for whom is the work intended? What background is needed? Is the purpose fulfilled? If not, why not?
  3. content and comparison: if possible provide context by remarking on how the particular work relates to other work in the field.

As you can see, the review covers a lot of ground! Fitting a review of this complexity into the space limits given will take a lot of attention to organization of your thoughts and probably require a couple of drafts in order to express thoughts succinctly but convincingly.
