Paper presentations

A team of two students will sign up for each of the readings and will take on the following tasks: summarizing the paper and finding additional resources related to the paper. The team of two can divide up the work in any way they wish. The team should be prepared to facilitate class discussion--indeed should encourage class discussion.

Students should expect to be involved in several paper sessions during the semester.

Paper summary

The purpose of the paper presentation is to give a brief review of the paper to help jog the class' memory, to give background and contextualization information about the paper, and to set the environment for consideration of the topics addressed in the paper. The goal is to synthesize the information in the paper, not to repeat it. To that end, you should prepare a limited number of slides about each paper and assume that your presentation should be 5 to 10 minutes in length. I would suggest preparing the following slides on a paper, with your goal being that each of these topics occupies at most one slide:

Paper presentations are evaluated on accuracy, insight, and appropriate use of time.

Paper resources

Resources are intended to bring up more information about the people, places, and topics discussed in the paper. As with the paper presentation, the resource presentation should be brief--again no more than 10 minutes in length. Some ideas for resources include:

Resource presentations are judged on accuracy, relevance, whether they bring new information to the class, and on appropriate use of time.
