This Website contains several links (that can be followed off of text
prompts) off of a menu below the image on the left side of the page
(Home, Services,...). Clicking on each of these links causes a second
level of links to be displayed.
Your task is to design theme-based image icons for as many of these
links as possible. The services page contains many other links. Create
icons that can replace these links as well.
- You must design at least 10 icons.
- The icons must be squares that are either 32 or 64 pixels wide in as many colors as you like. Design all icons in the same size.
- Pick a theme you like and model all your icons on this theme.
Sample themes include: government, household items, the corporate
world, hand gestures, the middle ages. For example, the "home"
icon may be depicted differently in each of the themes above as The
White House (government), an image of a house (household items), a
boardroom (the corporate world) or a medieval castle (the middle ages).
Feel free to explore different themes as well as the various mappings
that may be possible within each theme.
- You may create your icons via graphical design programs like MS-Paint, Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. If you find*
any images that are suitable for your theme, you may also grab images
from the Web and modify/adapt them for your purposes. You may combine
the two techniques and design some icons from images, while creating
others from the scratch.
- All themes may not be appropriate for all links. Pick the links to iconize based on your theme.
- There are no absolutes. Pick the best possible concept or object to represent each link.
*If
you do use images that are not created by you, please give credit where
it is due by placing a citation to the location of the original image
below the icon.
What to turn in:
- Clearly identify the theme that you have chosen.
- For each image
- include the icons as embedded images
- describe each icon and explain why it is appropriate for the link
- A discussion (at least 1 to 2 pages, double spaced) of how the
icons fit into the theme you have used and how they help maintain the
consistency of the theme. If some of these icons are inconsistent with
the theme explain why they are inconsistent with the theme, yet
appropriate as a pictorial representation for the link.
- Turn in a paper copy of the assignment in class.
- Place a link to your document from your course Web page.
- Email a pointer to the electronic copy to unmil@csdl.tamu.edu.
