This handout specifies two separate reading assignments, each with the
same specification. In each you will choose a paper from the proceedings of a
recent CHI-related conference proceedings,
do some research about the paper's background, and write a brief summary
report. More specifically
select a full paper from the proceedings of a major CHI-related conference
that took place after the book was published (generally these are ACM
conferences). Relevant proceedings include the
CHI conference (proceedings for some of the years are openly available at
SIGCHI's Web site, http://www.acm.org/sigchi), the ACM CSCW
conference, the ACM Hypertext conference, parts of the ACM Digital Libraries
conference, etc. Check with me if you want to pick a paper from a conference
not listed. Conference proceedings for these conferences are available to
subscribers to the ACM Digital Library (but unfortunately not on the TAMU site
license) or in paper form in the library.
read at least three of the references pointed to by the paper (either
references cited directly by the paper or ones pointed to by papers referenced
by the paper)
prepare a brief report including the following
bibliographical information about the paper (authors, title, citation,
etc.)
a brief summary about the paper's contents (aim for 200 words or less)
a brief description of where the paper fits into the broader literature,
as learned from your separate readings; include proper citations
to the referenced
literature. Take the space that you need for this, but most likely it will
only be a couple of pages long.
