We've been looking at some ways to actually get it to work with MP3's and other file formats. The solution so far: Attempt 1: Go into Finder->Applications Click and drag the icon for "Peak Express 4" down into your toolbar. Now take your sound file and drag it onto the New Peak Icon If that fails: Open up Peak, Click on the "Peak Express 4" menu item Go to Preferences -> Scratch Disks Click on Folder, then Macintosh HD, and choose the Temp folder Click Choose, then Ok Exit out of Peak Repeat Attempt 1. Keep in mind you can only save files in your home directory (you desktop is stored in there) or in the Temp folder. Also note that the temp folders are supposedly cleared out often, so if you want to save something, don't keep it there. Specifically, we had a metro attached to the velocity and pitch for a noteout and the metro was connected to a slider. At delays of <60ms (or so), you would get a rapid output from midi for about 3 seconds...then the patch could not produce any more sound until Max was exited, restarted, and the patch reloaded. Oh yes, and all of this was done on Olivier, if that affects anything. Not sure if it's a bug with the program, the machine, the sound system, etc., but I thought everyone should know about the experience and be forewarned. -Zach From andruid@cs.tamu.edu Mon Feb 7 15:04:24 2005 Received: from pine.cs.tamu.edu (pophost.cs.tamu.edu [128.194.138.12]) by csdl.tamu.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id PAA24748 for ; Mon, 7 Feb 2005 15:04:23 -0600 (CST) From: andruid@cs.tamu.edu Received: from webmail.cs.tamu.edu (webmail.cs.tamu.edu [128.194.138.28]) by pine.cs.tamu.edu (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id j17L44aH029517; Mon, 7 Feb 2005 15:04:04 -0600 (CST) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by webmail.cs.tamu.edu (8.11.6+Sun/8.11.6) id j17L44614605; Mon, 7 Feb 2005 15:04:04 -0600 (CST) X-Authentication-Warning: webmail.cs.tamu.edu: nobody set sender to andruid@cs.tamu.edu using -f Received: from 128.194.132.144 ( [128.194.132.144]) as user andruid@pine.cs.tamu.edu by webmail.cs.tamu.edu with HTTP; Mon, 7 Feb 2005 15:04:03 -0600 Message-ID: <1107810243.4207d7c3ec886@webmail.cs.tamu.edu> Date: Mon, 7 Feb 2005 15:04:03 -0600 To: recombinant@csdl.tamu.edu Cc: andruid@cs.tamu.edu MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit User-Agent: Internet Messaging Program (IMP) 3.1 X-Originating-IP: 128.194.132.144 Subject: [Recombinant] max patches due tomorrow Sender: recombinant-admin@csdl.tamu.edu Errors-To: recombinant-admin@csdl.tamu.edu X-BeenThere: recombinant@csdl.tamu.edu X-Mailman-Version: 2.0 Precedence: bulk List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: , List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: before class, put your patch into the folder on the server called everyones max patches From toupsz@tamu.edu Tue Feb 8 10:26:27 2005 Received: from smtp814.mail.sc5.yahoo.com (smtp814.mail.sc5.yahoo.com [66.163.170.84]) by csdl.tamu.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id KAA14493 for ; Tue, 8 Feb 2005 10:26:26 -0600 (CST) Received: from unknown (HELO ?10.32.39.38?) About the Musicians:

3345 radio remote
Austin, TX

3345 radio remote operate on the principle that two DJs are better than one. Using turntables and a computer, the versatile 3345rr duo banish stale beats from the dance floor with a dynamic set of techno, house and electro. Blending glitchy atmospherics with the heavy sounds of Kompakt and the squelchy synths of Bpitch Control, the 3345rr robots tie together many elements with unseen, but noticeable sonic threads.

Canartic
Dank Disk
Austin, TX

Austin's Jon Coats and Randall Peterson formed Canartic with bass player Gerard Smith in 2002, while collaborating at Peterson's Javahut Studio. Canartic utilize dub and downtempo styles as guides to collage electronic shapes around simple grooves. The chilled results are then injected with a dose of psychedelia, courtesy of heavily process guitar. Finally, samples round out the mix, providing listeners with hints to the ideas behind the music. Live, Canartic perform as a duo, with Coats dub mixing in real time from hard disk, and Peterson adding treatments and his processed guitar.

Canartic's newest CD, "Headphone Test," is out now on the collective's own Dank Disk label. Previous releases include an eponymous album, and the "Blacklight Days" EP, both also released by Dank Disk. The duo may mix their tracks for headphone use, but live you'll see the speaker cones move. Canartic are dedicated to spreading their "slow motion sound."

The Sidekick
EM Records
Austin, TX

Who's inside the costume? Who's behind the mask? And why is he dancing around like your little brother jacked up on too much soda pop? Nobody knows who The Sidekick is; he prefers to remain anonymous, an enigma. Austin, Texas is his home base - that's all we know for certain. After his shows, he simply packs up and disappears into the digital night. This secret identity enables The Sidekick to plug in, boot up, and dance without inhibition, leaving a smiling audience in his wake.

The Sidekick's music is the soundtrack to your favorite 8-bit video game, built from dreams, humor, and a pixel smashing vitality. His EM Records debut album, "SAGA!...the story of a boy and his computer," is an aural reminder of a time when Super Mario ruled the screen, electronic music was the sound your Nintendo made, and harmless pranks were played on schoolteachers. Evil end-of-level bosses, you have been warned!

Dreamtigers
Artificial Music Machine
Denton, TX

The Dreamtigers hail from Dallas, Texas and combine the aural aesthetics of found sounds with the calculated arrangement techniques of southern hip hop. Two members of the Dreamtigers originally found their niche as an electronic production duo writing and producing tracks for the Aleph and remixing such acts as Lamb and Midlake. Recently they have been creating sound content for various media as well as manipulating and producing tracks for Joshua Pearson of Lift to Experience fame. In their free time the tigers enjoy counting their cash, making out, getting really loaded and yelling at art school kids, playing video game basketball and coming up with lyrical ideas that are about the above.

Frivolous
Karloff, Background, Epsilonlab
Montreal, Canada

Born in Vancouver, and now living in Montreal, Daniel Gardner (aka Frivolous) is possibly a bit of an eccentric. Since 2002, he has released a series of 12" EPs and one CD on Background Records and Karloff Rekordings (a sub-label of Sub Static, distributed via Kompakt).

Both of these German labels represent the cutting edge of glitchy house/techno, and Frivolous is no exception. But Gardner's take on this genre is quite unique. His tracks have a decidedly playful and funky feel. And riding atop the beats, you'll find a healthy dose of vocals, acoustic instruments, and found sound samples - sped up, slowed down, looped, sliced, and diced. The end result is dance music with both innovative production techniques and emotional resonance.

Live, Frivolous invites the audience into a world of electronic experimentation, where inhibitions fall away, and the beauty of the inner-freak is unveiled. During his 2004 Mutek Festival show, sounds were triggered with a sandwich-maker, while the musician wore a chef's uniform. A European tour featured devices including a telephone control unit, and the patented Frivolous electro-magnetic knife, brandished while wearing a full-body skeleton suit. It's no wonder that critics have described his live show as "witnessing a mad scientist at work."

Ian Cion
Austin, TX

Ian Cion's objective is to build a bio-digital cathedral, an energy-neutral purification system, which integrates advances in bio-filtration systems, emerging technologies, and alternative energy in a work of architecture capable of having positive effects not only on the spirit, but also on the ecosystem. It is his belief that the present environmental goal of a minimum negative impact on our planet by human beings is not enough, and that a truly positive, symbiotic relationship between humanity and the earth must now be established. For meaningful impact to occur, a synergistic design practice must not only be practically superior to wasteful design tactics, but also aesthetically superior, making wide scale integration of positive impact design into our landscape wholeheartedly accepted and, hence, undeniable. His most recent project focuses on the application of active (video) camouflaging and digitally animated patterning onto wind turbines using OLED screens.

Ian Cion has exhibited in New York, London, Paris, Bangkok, Amsterdam, and Santa Fe. He has studied at Tulane University, Columbia University, and Santa Monica College.

JP Garrigues
Austin, TX

JP Garrigues is a motion graphic artist in Austin, TX. He graduated with a BS in biology from UT and quickly realized his education had stifled his creativity. He desparately tries to regain any sort of creativity through his After Effects creations but ultimately fails. JP is currently part of the SUPER!ALRIGHT! media collective and has worked on projects for Single Frame, Volcom records and Octopus Project.

Mark P. Hensel
Austin, TX

Mark P. Hensel, soon to graduate from UT-Austin, began his career with dinosaur drawings in the late eighties. In the Fall of 2004 he went to live in the desert for a few months, where, upon discovering actual fossils, he decided to become a performance artist. Over the past year he has been alternatively working with a blue plastic tarp or monsters, his only two means of defense in the wilderness. After obtaining a degree in cryptozoology, he plans to move into the field of robotics. His alter ego draws comics for the Daily Texan.

Nullpointer
Sheffield, UK

Tom Betts work focuses on both a formalistic deconstruction of digital forms as well as an approach to developing new methods of interaction and critique. He has produced numerous software artworks over the past several years including modifications and hacks of video game engines in order to create abstract architectural spaces. He has also produced experimental electronic music under the alias Vendor Refill, and helped create the generative internet radio website "rand()%".

Tom has exhibited and performed in a wide range of international venues, including the Sonar Festival (Spain), ZKM (Germany), Museo Tamayo (Mexico), New Museum (NYC), ICA Cybersonica Festival (London), Sonic Arts Festival (Amsterdam), MediaCitty Biennale (South Korea), and the Australian Independent Games/Art Conference.

Roboshobo
Los Angeles, CA

Robert Schober (Roboshobo Industries) lost 2 presidential elections in college. Slept on a floor with dogs for the better part of a year. Tattooed a friend in his dorm bathroom during finals. Built an inflatable house and tried to live in it for a month. Lied to a friend about something important. Had an eating disorder. Tried wheatgrass juice last week and didn't like it. Has brown hair. Doesn't regret going to school; just to the classes.

About the Flyer Artist:

Inksurge
Quezon City, Philippines

Brewed in Manila, Philippines in 2002, coffee junkies Joyce and Rex founded Inksurge as a stimulant to exercise their creative drive and an excuse for waking up late. The baristas were summoned by Kaldi of Caffa Ethopia to hyperactively join in the design world.

Both Rex and Joyce have worked for various clients and companies before getting the right brew in Inksurge. The passion for design lead them to creative outlets in the local scene by winning consecutively (2003-2004) the award for best site in the ARTS category in Philippine Web Awards. And in the international scene, appearances includes books and magazines such as Jeremyville Sketchel Show (AU), Curvy 2 (AU), D|Zone Magazine (NL), "New Typographics: new world typography with font samples" by Pie Books (JP), PLACE:35 Designers - 35 Cities by Actar (ES), "SONIC" Music by Die Gestalten Verlag GmbH & Co. K (DE), "Websites" by Feierabend Verlag (DE), K Magazine (MY), Half Empty (USA), PAGE Magazine (DE), Blank Magazine (ES), and as conference speakers for OFFF04 (ES).

One key development in this area is implantable in vivo monitoring and intervention devices. While the problems of long-term stability and biocompatibility are being addressed, several promising prototypes are starting to emerge for managing patients with acute diabetes, for treatment of epilepsy and other debilitating neurological disorders and for monitoring of patients with chronic cardiac diseases. Despite the technological developments in sensing and monitoring devices, issues related to system integration, sensor miniaturization, low-power sensor interface circuitry design, wireless telemetric links and signal processing have still to be investigated. Moreover, issues related to quality of service, security, multi-sensor data fusion, and decision support are active research topics needed for deploying body sensor networks. The aim of the workshop is to address general issues related to using wearable/wireless and implantable sensors and to bring together scientists from computing, electronics, bioengineering, medicine and industry in order to discuss the latest technological developments and clinical applications of body-sensor networks. Areas of interest include (but are not limited to) the following topics: Novel bioelectrical, biochemical, biophysical, and mechanical sensors Hardware considerations for body sensor networks, including: Low power RF transceivers, energy scavenging, battery technology, miniaturisation, system integration, process and cost of manufacturing Biocompatibility and materials Context awareness and multi-sensor data fusion for body sensor networks Quality of service and security issues for body sensor networks Standards and light-weight communication protocols for body sensor networks Links from the body to environment sensing, smart dwellings, and home monitoring Wearable and implantable (or swallowable, etc.) sensor integration and development platforms Applications of body-sensor networks - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- BSN 2005 Organization: General & Program Committee Co-chairs * Professor Joe Paradiso - MIT Media Lab * Professor Guang-Zhong Yang - Imperial College Program Committee * Dr. Paolo Bonato - Harvard Medical School & Harvard-MIT HST * Prof. Tony Cass - Imperial College * Prof. Sir Ara Darzi - Imperial College * Prof. Dermot Diamond - Dublin City University (DCU) * Dr. Terry Dishongh - Intel Inc * Thomas Falck - Philips Research, Aachen * Dr Leonard Fass - GE Healthcare * Dr. Bert Gyselinckx - IMEC Belgium * Prof. Hugh Herr - MIT Media Lab * Guy Hirson - DTI, UK * Prof. Sundaresan Jayaraman - Georgia Tech * Prof. Bill Kaiser - UCLA * Dr. David Krebs - MGH, Harvard * Dipl.-Ing. The last decade has witnessed a= rapid surge of interest in new sensing and
monitoring devices for healt= hcare and the use of wearable/wireless devices
and sensor networks for c= linical applications. One key development in this
area is implantable in vivo monitoring and intervention devices. While = the
problems of long-term stability and biocompatibility are being addre= ssed,
several promising prototypes are starting to emerge for managing p= atients
with acute diabetes, for treatment of epilepsy and other debilitatingneurological disorders and for monitoring of patients with chronic cardia= c
diseases. Despite the technological developments in sensing and monito= ring
devices, issues related to system integration, sensor miniaturization,<= br>low-power sensor interface circuitry design, wireless telemetric links a= nd
signal processing have still to be investigated. Moreover, issues rel= ated
to quality of service, security, multi-sensor data fusion, and decision=
support are active research topics needed for deploying body sensor
= networks.

The aim of the workshop is to address general issues relat= ed to using
wearable/wireless and implantable sensors and to bring together scienti= sts
from computing, electronics, bioengineering, medicine and industry i= n
order to discuss the latest technological developments and clinical
applications of body-sensor networks.

Areas of interest include = (but are not limited to) the following topics:

Novel bioelectrical, = biochemical, biophysical, and mechanical sensors

Hardware considerat= ions for body sensor networks, including:  Low power RF
transceivers, energy scavenging, battery technology, miniaturisation, system integration, process and cost of manufacturing

Biocompatibi= lity and materials

Context awareness and multi-sensor data fusion fo= r body sensor networks

Quality of service and security issues for body sensor networks
=
Standards and light-weight communication protocols for body sensor netw= orks

Links from the body to environment sensing, smart dwellings, an= d home

Abstract

People in the U.S. spend increasing amounts of their work and leisure time in front of computers. The term "human computer interaction" suggests a two-way exchange, with each participant aware of the other and responding appropriately. In reality, computers may appear frequently rude, frustrating, indifferent, and generally unpleasant. Much of this can be attributed to the fact that current computers are almost completely unaware of the actual state of the human user. The research community has proposed methods for computers to understand and respond to the computer user's feelings with mixed results. Emphasis has been placed on stress and frustration - feelings often generated by the use of the computer itself. There is no previous work, however, with regard to monitoring the actual health of the user during computer use. People check their health status rarely or when they are symptomatic. A typical health check features measurement of vital signs (e.g., pulse and respiration) at a doctor's office. The value of this check is limited by its isolated nature. This is especially true for chronic ailments like heartbeat irregularities, headaches, or anxiety disorders, which manifest themselves intermittently for short intervals in a stochastic manner. In this research effort we incorporate physiologic monitoring in the human-computer interface (HCI). The sensing element is a thermal imaging camera that is employed as a computer peripheral. Through bioheat modeling of facial imagery almost the full range of vital signs can be extracted, including blood flow, cardiac pulse, and breathing rate. This nearly continuous physiological information can then be used to draw inferences about a variety of health symptoms. Our research aims to realize the notion of desktop health monitoring and create truly collaborative interactions in which human and machines are both observing and responding.

Feadz
Bpitchcontrol
Paris, France

DJ Feadz is originally from Paris, and worked with Mr. Oizo on his first album “Analog Worms Attack”. Since then, he then released several EP’s on Ellen Allien's highly respected Bpitchcontrol label. His unique musical style combines cutting edge techno with a hip-hop soul, by incorporating deep bass-lines and glitchy breakbeats into a dance music context. Similarly, his DJ sets are renowned for including elements such as scratching and obscure gems from the past. But most importantly, his sets are always delivered in a fluid and coherent manner, keeping the crowd moving and dancing. His DJ set at this event promises to be a rare opportunity to experience a form of underground German techno rarely heard in Austin.

Uffie
Ed Banger
Paris, France

Uffie is an 18-year old girl from Miami. She discovered hip hop in the land of dirty south, and she never got rid of it. A few years ago she moved to Paris and ended up in the fashion world. When she booked DJ Feadz to play at a show, they met and fell in love. Eventually, Feadz asked her to do some vocals for his forthcoming project. Thus, Uffie was born.

She recently released her debut EP on Ed Banger Records, which is run by Pedro Winter, the man responsible for introducing such seminal acts as Daft Punk and Cassius to the world. Featuring production work by such luminaries as Mr. Oizo, Feadz, and Sebastian, her debut EP merges hip-hop lyrics with cutting edge electronic beats. This performance will be Uffie's first show on her first ever tour of North America, and it's an exciting opportunity to catch this promising young artist on the cusp on stardom.

About the Visual Artists:

Andreas Nilsson
Gothenburg, Sweden

Andreas Nilsson is an artist born in the countryside of Sweden. He works with various techniques such as video, animation, sausage and hay.

Through his work, Andreas explores the fields of mythology, UFO-lore, magic, technology, and the creation of new images of old gods. He has also undertaken a deep exploration of the pancake's place in religion and its spiritual qualities. Recently, he made life size models of long exctinct and possibly fictional creatures such as the Moa bird and the Skval. He is also a music video director primarily working with Scandinavian and British acts.

At the present, he is responsible for producing the scenery for the European tour of The Knife. The show promises to be a layered experience with animation and dolls. Andreas has an MFA from the Art Academy in Gothenburg, Sweden and is now senior teacher in Computer Game Design and Hypermedia at the University of Skövde, Sweden.

Cari Palazzolo
Austin, TX

Three years ago, Cari discovered recording with sound and color. She then could not stop animating things with bright colors and putting noises next to them. Her work explores concepts like post-post modernism and other accessible dimensions of the digital realm via performance, video, and music.

Jarrod Beck
Austin, TX

Jarrod Beck practices on the edge of art and architecture, constructing manifestations of the sensate through drawings, prints and built form. Transient materials are processed with a silent violence, ripped from a magazine, decapitated. Artifice and carelessness are matched against architectural precision in a series of maneuvers, drawing and redrawing, stripping images to their structure and leaving them to dissolve into an efflorescent haze.

David Atherton
Austin, TX

Avant-garde intermedia artist David Atherton's work is held in both corporate & private collections. He received his B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design (honors in sculpture) and his Masters of Science in Visual Studies from the Center For Advanced Visual Studies and the M.I.T. Media Lab's Music & Cognition Group where his thesis was on "Semiotic design & computer controlled light, sound and robotics".

David has collaborated extensively with artists visiting MIT, produced many computer controlled multi-media installations including the "THE MIDI CUBE", utilizing the four story experimental theater at the core of the M.I.T. Media Lab. He taught graduate & undergraduate computer graphics and sound for film & video at M.I.T.'s Visible Language Workshop. He also has served on the board of directors, future of the Arts (Waynflete School) & IRCAM (Boston).

In addition to his academic-related work, David has produced custom sound waves for, and engineered, England's renowned experimental computer music composer, Jonathan Harvey's "From Silence". He has worked for NBC. His work has been on MTV, Cartoon Network. He has scored Music and SFX for computer graphics placing 1st & 2nd in the worldwide computer graphics competition SIGGRAPH, many industrials, documentaries, independent shorts placing in the Red Film Festival China, and the feature film "Barn of the Blood Llama" which has become a "cult classic" in Australia. He has founded the ZN artist collective and studied with West African tribal drum and dance masters and Japanese Butoh dance masters.

Leticia Abreu
Austin, TX

Leticia Abreu is an artist and animator who splits her time between Brazil and Austin. She works with both traditional hand-drawn animation and digital media. She often integrates her hand-drawn work into a digital context using video editing, Flash, and other methods. Her work incorporates everything from dark, brooding, charcoal experimentation to clean lines and cute, colorful characters.

Peter Jordan
Austin, TX

Peter Jordan holds a BFA in Painting from the University of North Texas. Initially interested in digital media and its impact on contemporary visual discourse, his early work considered the irony of physically reproducing the digital aesthetic through analogue means. Largely this included producing large abstract color block paintings which referenced color field painting, abstract expressionism, post-painterly abstraction and new image. This early work was both contemporary and referential. Primary early influences include Kenneth Noland, Ellsworth Kelly, Jeff Elrod and Ingrid Calame.

Mr. Jordan remains preoccupied with digital media, but now less as a means towards aesthetic ends. He believes the potential of digital video as an art medium provides an opportunity to consider the role of found object and collage as it pertains to DRM, ownership, time and space shifting of intellectual property, commerce, popular culture and counter culture. Using clips taken from film, images from pop culture and mass media, and other found imagery, he creates video which is temporal, yet strives to achieve the static presence of a painting. Current influences include John Oswald, Bruce Nauman and Dan Graham.

Some exhibitions include the New Texas Talent show at Craighead Green Gallery in Dallas and the Critic’s Choice exhibit at the Dallas Visual Art Center (now Dallas Contemporary). His painting “Untitled Yellow” won Best of Show in Critic’s Choice, juried by Nasher Sculpture Center Director Steven Nash. Mr. Jordan currently lives and works in Austin, Texas.

Virginia Lee Smith
Austin, TX

Virginia Smith is a multi-disciplined young artist studying at the University of Texas. Her works are characterized by a preoccupation with color as a narrative element and an attraction for performance. Her subjects span from alien occult phenomena to human biology.

Wyld File
Portland, OR

Wyld File is an American Multi Media team specializing in the production of music videos for interweb, DVD-ROMs and televisions. This team includes the talents of Paper Rad, E*Rock, and Cory Arcangel, all three of whom are well-known media artists in their own right.

They first worked together on a video for Beck's "Gameboy Homeboy" remixes, and this is when the concepts of Faxelism and "Dogman 99" were born. Dogman 99 is a loosely based value system consisting of the rules "no Wacom tablet, no scanning, pure RGB colors only, only fake tweening, as many alpha tricks as possible". "Faxel" was a term coined to desribe Wyld File's vector based pixel style.

Since then, Wyld File has worked on two more videos for Beck, and a video for The Gossip. They are currently working on several new collaborations.

About the Flyer Artist:

AJ Dimarucot
Makati City, Philippines

AJ Dimarucot is a 30 year old graphic and web designer based in Manila, Philippines. After spending 7 years taking up Industrial Engineering at the University of the Philippines, he realized that art and design was his true calling. Bursting into the web scene in 2000 with his satirical "LabskosiErap!" (I Love Erap!) website--poking fun at now deposed Philippine President Joseph "Erap" Estrada, Aj quickly became one of the most sought after figures in the local web design community.

After a two-year stint with top local web shop 25by8, he now works as an award-winning art director for OgilvyOne Worldwide. In the Interactive Awards held during the 2003 Philippine Advertising Congress in Baguio City, Aj dominated the field by grabbing 2 Golds and 1 Silver out of just less than 10 total awards given. He is now a respected pioneer in the industry and has been invited as judge in the Philippine Web Awards for the last several years.

Actively involved in the local independent music scene, Aj has created posters and shirts for bands DRIP and The Bitterpill. In his free time, Aj dabbles in photography and live visual performance, being part of electronica duo Morse. He has also partnered with graffiti artist/dj/beatsmith Caliph8 to form a loose design group called collisiontheory.
