Plants hermaphroditic, caespitose, perennial. Culms erect, glabrous; internodes solid, terete. Leaves basal and cauline;
sheaths terete, margins open; auricles absent; ligules a ciliate membrane; blades flat or involute, not pungent. Panicles
open or contracted; primary branches spreading (mature branches drooping), terminating in a spikelet.
Spikelets solitary, laterally compressed to oval, awnless, pedicellate, pedicels without glands; disarticulation
above glumes; florets 5-10, callus hairy; reduced floret at apex; glumes, first 3-5-veined, second 7-9-veined,
chartaceous, entire, awnless, hairy; lemmas 7-9-veined, chartaceous, entire, awnless, hairy, veins glabrous;
paleas 2-veined, awnless, glabrous. Stamens 3; anthers reddish purple. Caryopses with persistant style bases, terete.
Chromosome numbers 2n=60 and 64.
A monotypic North American genus that is occasional on sandy areas of dunes, riverbanks or pastures.
The species is adapted to open habitats. Relationships to other genera are problematic.
