Plants hermaphroditic, caespitose, annual or perennial (ours). Culms erect to ascending, glabrous (nodes glabrous); internodes solid, terete. Leaves basal, not conspicuously distichous; sheaths terete, margins open; auricles absent; ligules a ciliate membrane or a line of hairs (ours); blades flat or involute, not pungent, attenuate or not attenuate, stiff. Panicles open or contracted (ours), primary branches ascending, terminating in a spikelet. Spikelets solitary, laterally compressed, awned, pedicellate, pedicels without glands; disarticulation above glumes; florets 4-10, callus hairy, reduced floret at apex; glumes 1-veined, unequal or subequal, shorter than first floret, glabrous; lemmas 3-veined, membranous, apex trifid, awned (3), veins pilose to villous; paleas 2-veined, awnless, glabrous. Stamens 3; anthers yellow. Caryopses with fused pericarp, linear. Base chromosome number x=10.

A genus of about seven species. Species of mesic to xeric habitats where the habitat is open. The soils of these habitats are sandy or rocky.
