Plants hermaphroditic, caespitose, annual. Culms erect or geniculate, glabrous; internodes solid, terete. Leaves basal and
cauline; sheaths terete, margins open; auricles absent; ligules membranous; blades flat or involute, not pungent.
Panicles narrow; spicate primary unilateral branches ascending to spreading, alternate, terminating in a spikelet.
Spikelets solitary, laterally compressed, awned, subsessile or pedicellate; pedicels without glands; disarticulation above
glumes; florets 4 - 8, callus glabrous; reduced florets at apex; glumes 1-veined, unequal, longer than first
floret (about spikelet length), glabrous, awned to mucronate, glabrous to scabrous (veins hairy); lemmas 3-veined,
membranous, emarginate, mucronate, glabrous to scabrous, veins hairy; paleas 2-veined, awnless, glabrous (except between
veins). Caryopses laterally compressed. Stamens 3; anthers reddish purple. Base chromosome of x = 10.
A genus of about 10 species mostly from Africa. The species occur in open, sandy or rocky habitats. This
genus is thought to be closely related to Leptochloa (Peterson et al., 1997).
