TRICHLORIS Benth.
Plants hermaphroditic, caespitose or stoloniferous, perennial. Culms erect or ascending, glabrous; internodes hollow or solid,
terete. Leaves basal and cauline, not distinctly distichous; sheaths terete, margins open; auricles absent; ligules a ciliate
membrane; blades flat, linear, lax, apex acuminate. Panicles of several spicate primary unilateral branches; branches
in verticils (some closely positioned on the central axis), ascending, terminating in a spikelet, spikelets in two
rows. Spikelets solitary, laterally compressed, disarticution above the glumes, awned, sessile or subsessile;
florets 3-4, (lower 2 perfect), reduced florets at apex, rachilla not extended beyond upper floret, awned; glumes 2,
1-veined, unequal, shorter than first floret, glabrous, awned; lemmas 3-veined, coriaceous, glabrous, apex acute,
3-awned; awns apical; paleas 2-veined, awnless, glabrous. Stamens 3; anthers cream. Caryopses linear, brown.
Base chromosome number x=10.
A genus of two species. It is thought to be derived from Enteropogon. These species are adapted to plains
and dry woods of South Texas and Mexico.
