SCLEROPOGON Phil.
Plants dioecious or monoecious, stoloniferous, perennial. Culms erect or mat forming, glabrous; internodes solid,
terete. Leaves basal; sheaths terete, margins open; auricles absent; ligules a line of hairs; blades flat or folded, pungent,
attenuate stiff; racemes or panicles narrow (exserted); primary branches appressed, terminating in a spikelet.
Spikelets unisexual, solitary, terete or laterally compressed, awned (pistillate) or awnless (staminate), pedicellate;
pedicels without glands; florets 2-5 (rarely 1 in staminate), callus glabrous or hairy; reduced florets above (pistillate
reduce to awns); disarticulation above glumes; glumes 1-5 veined (first 1-5, second 3-5), nearly equal, shorter than spikelets,
glabrous; lemmas 3-veined, coriaceous, apex entire, glabrous, veins glabrous; paleas 2-veined, awnless, glabrous.
Stamens 3; anthers yellow. Caryopses terete. Base chromosome number x=10.
A monotypic genus of the New World. Reeder and Toolin (1987) found no reason to recognize two
species. A species with a wide distribution.
