SACCIOLEPIS Nash Cupscale
Plants stoloniferous, perennial. Culms ascending or decumbent or rarely erect, glabrous; internodes hollow,
terete. Leaves not differentiated into two kinds (basal rosette absent), cauline, not distinctly distichous;
sheaths terete; ligules a membrane or ciliate membtane; blades flat (thin). Panicles narrow or
contracted, primary branches ascending or appressed, terminating in a spikelet; bristles absent below
spikelets. Spikelets solitary, not embedded in branch, adaxial, dorsiventrally compressed;
disarticulation below the spikelets; florets 2; lower florets sterile, staminate or without stamens;
upper florets fertile one half to near lower floret length; first glumes present, less than one half
spikelet length, not fused with callus, not encircling spikelet base, awnless; second glumes present, nearly
spikelet length, saccate, 7- or 9-veined; lemma of upper florets cartilaginous or
indurate, scabrous, white, glabrous, margins flat, not differentiated at apex, awnless; palea of upper
florets present. Stamens 3; anthers yellow with purplish tinge. Base chromosome number x=9.
A genus of about 30 species worldwide. Our two species are weedy and introduced.
