REDFIELDIA VASEY
Plants hermaphroditic, caespitose or rhizomatous, perennial. Culms erect to ascending, glabrous; internodes solid, terete. Leaves cauline; sheaths terete, margins open; auricles absent; ligules a ciliate membrane; blades involute, not pungent, attenuate. Panicles open (one-half plant height); primary branches spreading (branchlets capillary and flexuous), terminating in a spikelet. Spikelets solitary, laterally compressed, awnless, pedicellate; pedicels without glands; florets 2-6, callus hairy; reduced florets at apex; disarticulation above the glumes; glumes 1-veined (second occasionally 2-3-veined), unequal, shorter than first floret, glabrous; lemmas 3-veined (callus hairy), chartaceous, entire (or slightly toothed), mucronate, hairy, veins glabrous; paleas 2-veined, awnless, glabrous. Stamens 3; anthers yellow or reddish purple. Caryopses terete. Base chromosome number x=10.

A monotypic genus native to North America. Plants of open sandy soils that are an important components of the Great Plains.
