PHYLLOSTACHYS Sieb. & Zucc.
Plants hermaphroditic, rhizomatous, perennial. Culms arborescent (3-20 m tall), erect or ascending,
primary branches per mid-culm node 2 then rebranching, glabrous; internodes hollow,
semiterete (flattened on 1-side). Leaves cauline, not distinctly distichous; sheath terete,
margins open, deciduous at maturity; auricles present or absent; ligules membranous or a ciliate membrane;
blades flat, wide, pseudopetiolate, tessellate (cross-veined). Reproductive structures
not produced every year, seldom flowering. Panicles or racemes (or single spikelets) open,
branches or pedicels spreading or ascending. Spikelets solitary (1.8-8 cm long), laterally
compressed, disarticulation above the glumes, awnless or mucronate, pedicellate; florets 3-6,
callus glabrous, rachilla not extended beyond upper floret; glumes 1 or 2 or 3, many-veined,
slightly unequal, shorter than the first floret, glabrous, awnless; lemmas many-veined, membranous
or chartaceous, glabrous, apex acuminate, awnless or mucronate; paleas several-veined, 2-keeled,
awnless, glabrous. Stamens 3. Caryopses longitudinally grooved. Base chromosome number x=6. A
genus of about 50 species.
