Plants hermaphroditic, caespitose, annual. Culms erect or ascending, glabrous; internodes hollow, terete.
Leaves cauline, not distinctly distichous; sheaths terete (hispid), margins open; auricles absent; ligules
membranous; blades flat (glabrous to hispid), linear, lax. Panicles narrow or contracted, primary
branches ascending (secondary branches with spikelets to near base). Spikelets solitary, terete,
disarticulation below glumes, awned, pedicellate; florets 1, reduced floret absent, callus glabrous;
rachilla extended beyond upper floret as a bristle; ; glumes 2; 3-5-veined (obscure), equal, longer
than first floret, hispid to pilose), awnless; lemmas inconspicuously 3-veined, membranous, glabrous
(minutely rugose), apex acute or minutely bifid; awn present (dorsal from just apex), geniculate; veins
scabrous to hispid; paleas 2-veined at base or veinless, awnless, glabrous. Stamens 3; anthers light cream.
Caryopses linear, amber. Base chromosome number x=7.
A monotypic North American genus. This species is common in open woodlands, stream banks, and
savannahs.
