Plants hermaphroditic, caespitose, annual. Culms decumbent, glabrous; internodes solid, terete. Leaves
cauline, not distinctly distichous; sheaths terete or with compressed keels, margins open; auricles absent;
ligules membranous; blades flat or involute, linear, lax. Spikes cylindrical, rachis disarticulating,
pedicels absent. Spikelets solitary at inflorescence nodes, appearing sunken, dorsiventrally
compressed, disarticulating below the glumes, awnless, sessile; florets 2, reduced floret at apex,
callus glabrous, rachilla not extended beyond upper floret; glumes 1, first glume absent, second glume
present, 3-7-veined, longer than first floret, awnless; lemmas 3-5-veined, hyaline to membranous
, glabrous, apex entire (accuminate); paleas 2-veined, awnless, glabrous. Stamens 3; anthers yellow.
Caryopses dorsiventrally compressed, oblong to elliptical, tan. Base chromosome number x=13(?).
A monotypic genus, commonly a disturbance species. Originally from the Mediterranean area. A mesic
species it is found along the coast and in meadows.
