Plants hermaphroditic, caespitose or rhizomatous or stoloniferous, annual or perennial. Culms erect or ascending, hairy; internodes solid or hollow, terete. Leaves basal or basal and cauline, not distinctly distichous; sheaths terete, margins open; auricles absent; ligules a membrane or ciliate membrane or a line of hairs; blades flat or folded, linear, lax. Panicles or racemes, open or narrow or contracted, primary branches spreading or ascending. Spikelets solitary, laterally compressed, disarticulation above glumes, awned, pedicellate; florets 3, reduced florets (2) at base (without paleas), upper floret perfect, callus glabrous, rachilla extending beyond upper floret; glumes 2, 5-veined, equal or unequal, shorter than spikelet, glabrous, awnless; lower lemmas (2) transversely rugose the lower most with lateral ear like appendases, awned, chartaceous to indurate; upper lemmas 5-7-veined, indurate, glabrous, apex entire, awnless or mucronate; upper floret paleas 2-veined, awnless, glabrous. Stamens 3 or 4 or 6; anthers yellow. Caryopses laterally compressed. Base chromosome number x=6.
