CHASMANTHIUM Link Woodoats
Plants hermaphroditic, caespitose or rhizomatous, perennial. Culms erect or ascending (some drooping), nodes glabrous; internodes hollow, terete. Leaves cauline, not distinctly distichous; sheaths terete, margins open; auricles absent; ligules a ciliate membrane; blades flat or folded, cross venation absent, not pungent, linear or lanceolate (narrow or broad), stiff or lax. Panicles (rarely reduced to racemes) open or contracted, primary branches spreading (drooping) or appressed, terminating in a spikelet. Spikelets solitary, laterally compressed, awnless, pedicellate, pedicels without glands; disarticulation above glumes; florets 2-20, callus glabrous or hairy; reduced florets (1-4) at base and frequently 1 at apex; glumes 2, 3-7-veined, equal or unequal, shorter than first floret, glabrous; lemmas 7-11-veined, chartaceous, apex acute to acuminate, awnless, glabrous, veins glabrous; paleas 2-veined and 2-keeled, awnless, glabrous. Stamens 1; anthers yellow with purple tinge, Caryopses with free pericarp, ovate to elliptic, dark brown to black, laterally compressed. Base chromosome number x=12.
