Plants dioecious, caespitose or stoloniferous or rhizomatous, perennial. Culms erect or ascending,
glabrous; internodes solid, terete. Leaves cauline; sheaths terete, margins open; auricles absent; ligules a ciliate membrane;
blades flat (may become involute), not pungent. Panicles narrow; primary branches appressed, terminating in a spikelet.
Spikelets unisexual, solitary, terete, awnless, pedicellate; pedicels without glands; florets 6-18, callus glabrous; disarticulation
above glumes; reduced floret at apex; glumes (first 1-veined, second 3-veined), nearly equal, shorter than first floret, glabrous;
lemmas 3-veined, coriaceous, entire, awnless, glabrous, veins glabrous; paleas 2-veined, awnless, glabrous. Staminate plants,
stamens 3; anthers yellow. Pistillate plants, caryopses ellipsoid. Base chromosome number x=10.
A monotypic genus native to North America. Infrequent in the sandy, open bottomlands of west Texas and nothern Mexico. Distinguished from Distichlis
by Soderstrom and Decker (1965).
